Middletown History

What makes Middletown special? Middletown, a 58.735 square mile township located in Monmouth County, is divided into 12 different zip codes by the United States Postal Service.  The following zip codes make up the Middletown area:

  • Atlantic Highlands – 07716
  • Belford – 07718
  • Highlands – 07732
  • Holmdel – 07733
  • Leonardo – 07737
  • Lincroft – 07738
  • Locust/Rumson – 07760
  • Middletown – 07748
  • Navesink – 07752
  • New Monmouth – 07748
  • Port Monmouth – 07758
  • Red Bank – 07701

In 1665, Middletown was settled by English who migrated from western Long Island and New England.

After the Battle of Monmouth, the British retreated from Freehold down King’s Highway in Middletown to Sandy Hook where the departed to NYC.

In 1693, Middletown Township was originally formed and was incorporated as a township in 1798. Portions of the township were taken to form Atlantic Township (now Colts Neck Township), Raritan Township (now Hazlet Township), Atlantic Highlands, Highlands and Keansburg.

Naval Weapons Station Earle, a United States Navy Base, loaded the majority of ammunition used by the Allies for the invasion of Normandy.  Earle continued to develop after World War II, keeping pace with the changing needs of the Navy and DoD during the Cold War. In subsequent years, Earle proved its strategic worth as the DoD transshipment site for ordnance used in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The station’s main site is located in Colts Neck and the waterfront is in the Leonardo section of Middletown on Sandy Hook Bay. The waterfront has a finger pier that stretches for 2.9 miles, making it the world’s second-longest such pier.

Local neighborhoods, their flavor, and identity are fundamental to the history of Middletown. The different neighborhoods tend to distinguish and define Middletown by the character of its respective parts, albeit at a cost of municipal identity. Middletown’s neighborhoods arose at varied times over its long history and have singular character.

Middletown borders the Monmouth County communities of Atlantic Highlands, Colts Neck, Fair Haven, Hazlet, Highlands, Holmdel, Keansburg, Red Bank, Rumson, Sea Bright and Tinton Falls.

In 2016, SafeWise named Middletown Township as the fifth-safest city in America to raise a child.
