Matawan History

What makes Matawan special? Matawan (07747), a 2.403 square mile borough in Monmouth County, was first settled by the Lenape Native Americans who called the area “Mechananienk”, a word meaning “where two rivers come together.”

In 1650, part of the Raritan Bay was purchased from the Lenni Lenape by Dutch settlers making this the earliest known attempt at European settlement.

In 1769, Burrowes Mansion was purchased by the John Burrowes, Sr (“Corn King”) and was the site of a skirmish during the Revolutionary War.

Matawan was formed as a borough in 1895, from portions of Matawan Township.

In 1916, Matawan Creek was the site of a vicious shark attack that became the subject of several documentaries. Jaws may not be based on a true story but respected news outlets often cite the 1916 New Jersey shark attacks as being the main inspiration for the movie.

Matawan played an important role in aviation navigation history. In 1944, the first operational Visual Aural Range (VAR) was installed at Matawan.

In 1977, a portion of Matawan (Matawan Township) becomes Aberdeen Township. These neighboring towns share a zip code, school system and a sense of community.

Matawan divides Aberdeen Township into two non-contiguous sections, with a small wedge-shaped exclave on the township’s southwest corner separated from the rest of the township by a portion of Matawan located on the opposite side of Route 79.

Matawan appeals to a wide variety of residents, partly because of an excellent transportation network but also for its wealth of natural resources, including two lakes and the Matawan Creek. Matawan is informally divided into several neighborhoods largely defined by its two lakes, Lefferts and Matawan, and the two major highways that bisect Matawan, Routes 79 and 34.

Matawan borders Aberdeen and Marlboro in Monmouth County and Old Bridge in Middlesex County.
