Freehold History

What makes Freehold special? Freehold (07728), located in Monmouth County, is made up of two municipalities – Freehold Borough (referred to as the “Borough” by residents) & Freehold Township (referred to as the “Township” by residents) , but it didn’t start that way…

It has been said that the Lenni Lenape, a Native American hunter-gatherer society, were the earliest known people to live in the area that became Freehold.

In 1693, Freehold (along with Middletown & Shrewsbury) was established as one of the three original towns in Monmouth County.

In 1715, Monmouth Courthouse opened, after Freehold was designated as the official seat of the Monmouth County government.  The Declaration of Independence was publicly proclaimed from the steps of the Monmouth Courthouse just a few days after being signed in Philadelphia (more information on this can be found in Barbara Pepe’s book Freehold: A Home Town History).

St. Peter’s, an Episcopal church, was built in 1771 and served as a hospital for both British and Colonial soldiers during the Battle of Monmouth. In 1824, the American Hotel opened on Main Street in Freehold. It is still standing today and is one of the oldest buildings in Freehold. In 1853, the Freehold Raceway opened.

In 1919, Freehold Borough (village surrounding the courthouse) formally separated from Freehold Township (farmland surrounding the courthouse village) due to the fact that the residents living in the village surrounding the courthouse had very different ideas about how to spend public money compared to the people living in the surrounding farmland.

Freehold Borough, a 1.952 square mile borough, kept its official county seat of Monmouth County. The Borough consists of the downtown area (Court Street & Main Street) around the courthouse.

Freehold Township, a 38.727 square mile township, consists of the communities that surrounded the courthouse. A new town hall was established on Schanck Road. Freehold Township completely surrounds Freehold Borough, making it a “doughnut town” – where one municipality entirely surrounds another.

Freehold borders Colts Neck, Howell, Manalapan, Marlboro & Millstone (Monmouth County) and Jackson (Ocean County).

Bruce Springsteen grew up in the Borough and graduated from Freehold High School. His song “My Hometown” was inspired by Freehold.
