Englishtown History

What makes Englishtown special? Englishtown, established in 1888, is a borough named after an early settler, James English. Englishtown was the headquarters of the Continental Army during the Battle of Monmouth on June 28, 1778.

Englishtown, a 0.586 square mile borough, which is located in Manalapan Township, borders Freehold, Marlboro, and Millstone (Monmouth County), and Monroe and Old Bridge (Middlesex County). Englishtown is completely surrounded by Manalapan, making Manalapan a “doughnut town” – where one municipality entirely surrounds another.

How are the schools in Englishtown? Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District is committed to educating the whole child both socially and academically.  Their goal is to create a safe and stimulating environment for lifelong learners.

Manalapan-Englishtown School District serves students in Pre-School through 8th Grade and is composed of one Early Learning Center for Pre-School through Kindergarten: John I Dawes Early Learning Center, five Elementary Schools for Grades K-5: Clark Mills School (Grades 1-5), Lafayette Mills School (Grades 1-5),  Milford Brook School (Grades K-5) and Taylor Mills Schools (Grades K-5) and Wemrock Brook School (Grades 1-5) and two Middle Schools for Grades 6-8:  Pine Brook School (Grade 6) and Manalapan-Englishtown Middle School (Grades 7-8).

Students from Englishtown in Grades 9-12 attend Manalapan High School (home of the Braves) and is part of the Freehold Regional High School District. Manalapan High School is a fully-accredited comprehensive high school serving a community of nearly 38,000 residents living exclusively in the Township of Manalapan and the Borough of Englishtown. Since opening in 1971, Manalapan High School has enjoyed an outstanding reputation throughout the state for its academic and extracurricular programs.

Freehold Regional High School District offers rising 9th Graders the opportunity to apply to twelve prestigious magnet programs – Animal and Botanical Sciences (Freehold Twp), Business Administration (Marlboro), Computer Science (Freehold), Culinary Arts & Hospitality Management (Freehold), Fine and Performing Arts (Howell), Global Studies (Freehold Twp), Humanities (Howell), Law and Public Service (Colts Neck), Law Enforcement and Public Safety (Manalapan), Medical Sciences (Freehold), Navy Junior ROTC (Colts Neck), Science and Engineering (Manalapan). These programs allow students to pursue passions in specific, focused areas. 9th Graders who are accepted into one of these magnet programs become full-time students at the program’s home school for all four years of their high school career. Many Manalapan students attend these various magnet programs available at other district high schools and students from other municipalities in the district (Colts Neck, Englishtown, Farmingdale, Freehold, Howell, and Marlboro) attend Manalapan High School’s Law Enforcement and Public Safety Magnet Program and Manalapan High School’s Science/Engineering Specialized Learning Center.

Interstate 195 is accessible in bordering town Millstone. Interstate I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike) is accessible in bordering town – Monroe and neighboring towns – Howell and Wall.

How is the commute from Englishtown to Manhattan/Jersey City? 

Manalapan to Port Authority:

NJ Transit provides bus service along the Route 9 corridor (sheltered bus stops), between Englishtown and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan. NJ Transit Route #139 runs down Route 9 and stops at local stops and Route #132 runs the Gordon’s Corner Express route. Gordons Corner stop to Port Authority has a travel time of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. NJ bus tickets can be purchased at the deli near the Gordon’s Corner stop, Gulf gas station on Ryan Road, Penny Pantry on Texas Road in Marlboro or the Union Hill Road Park & Ride.

Manalapan to Penn Station:

The Aberdeen/Matawan train station (approximately 25 minutes from Manalapan), a heavily used train station on the North Jersey Coast Line, providing service to NY Penn Station (31st Street & 8th Avenue). Travel times from Aberdeen/Matawan to Penn Station range from 43 minutes to 1 hour and 14 minutes. NJ Transit Rail Tickets can be purchased at the Aberdeen/Matawan Station. There are commuter lots located at the Aberdeen/Matawan Station.

Manalapan to Wall Street:

Academy Bus Lines provides service along the Route 9 corridor to Wall Street. Travel time from the Gordons Corner stop to Wall Street is approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. Academy bus tickets can be purchased at the Gordons Corner Stop, Penny Pantry on Texas Road in Marlboro or in the Pond Road Shopping Center in Freehold.

Prefer traveling by water? Check out Belford Ferry in Middletown or the SeaStreak service in Highlands. SeaStreak offers ferry service to NYC with stops in Wall Street and 35th Street in Manhattan.

Manalapan to Jersey City:

NJ Transit provides bus service between Manalapan and Jersey City. NJ Transit Route #63 runs Express and Route #64 runs Local.  Travel time is approximately 1 hour and 12 minutes on the Express Route. NJ bus tickets can be purchased at the deli near the Gordon’s Corner stop, Gulf gas station on Ryan Road, Penny Pantry on Texas Road in Marlboro or the Union Hill Road Park & Ride.

The Aberdeen/Matawan train station (approximately 25 minutes from Manalapan), a heavily used train station on the North Jersey Coast Line, provides service to NY Penn Station. To get to Jersey City, you would transfer at the Newark/Penn Station Stop and take the PATH to one of the numerous Jersey City stops. Travel time from Aberdeen/Matawan to Newark/Penn Station is approximately 1 hour and then travel times from the PATH to Jersey range from 15-25 minutes depending on where you are going in Jersey City.

 

Where is commuter parking in Englishtown?

Manalapan Township & Englishtown Borough have multiple commuter parking lots (annual permit required) –

  • Franklin Lane – in the vicinity of Gordons Corner Rd & Route 9 (also a daily park and ride lot located at this location)
  • Symmes Drive – intersects with Route 9 South and Ryan Road across from the Epicentre Shopping Mall
  • Towne Pointe – located in the  Towne Pointe Shopping Center and is accessible from Tennent Road or Route 9 South
  • Craig Road – real lot located behind the Bed, Bath & Beyond building on Craig Road & Route 9
  • Monmouth Heights Swim Club –  located on Ryan Road at the entrance to the Monmouth Heights Swim Club
