Colts Neck History
What makes Colts Neck special? Colts Neck (07722), a 31.792 square mile township in Monmouth County, was established in 1847 from portions of Middletown, Freehold and Shrewsbury Townships. Originally a farming community, Colts Neck has long been known for its large number of equestrian farms and rural atmosphere. Many people choose to move to Colts Neck due to its open space and proximity to the Jersey Shore all while still being within commuting distance of New York City and, to a lesser extent, Philadelphia.
The township has strict zoning ordinances which have kept out many larger chain stores, allowing for more locally owned businesses. In addition, the Farmland Preservation Committee has preserved nearly 1,000 acres of land which has aided in Colts Neck’s ability to prevent large-scale development.
There is no public water or sewage service in Colts Neck and most homes are built on lots covering a minimum of 2 acres.
Colts Neck more so resembles a small town in the Midwest, not one in central New Jersey. The best part is that it is still close to malls, movie theaters, and other amenities in neighboring communities.
