Aberdeen History

What makes Aberdeen special?

Aberdeen (07747), a 7.774 square mile township in Monmouth County, was created from portions of Matawan. These neighboring towns share a zip code and school system.

Aberdeen Township derived its name from “New Aberdeen,” a name for a settlement established in Northwestern Monmouth County in the 1680s by Quakers and Presbyterians who fled Scotland to avoid religious persecution.

In 1977, a portion of Matawan becomes Aberdeen Township. The residents of Matawan Township voted to change the name of the Township to create a community identity separate from that of Matawan Borough. Officials believed the new name would draw attention to the Township, as it is listed first alphabetically among New Jersey’s 566 municipalities.

Matawan divides Aberdeen Township into two non-contiguous sections, with a small wedge-shaped exclave on the township’s southwest corner separated from the rest of the township by a portion of Matawan located on the opposite side of Route 79.

Unincorporated communities and census-designated places located within Aberdeen include Cliffwood Beach and Strathmore and other sections in the Township include Cliffwood, Freneau, Oakshades, River Gardens, and Woodfield.

There are three postal zip codes which service Aberdeen Township: 07721 (Cliffwood), 07735 (Cliffwood Beach, Keyport & Union Beach) and 07747 (Aberdeen & Matawan).

Aberdeen borders Hazlet, Holmdel, Keansburg, Keyport, Marlboro, and Matawan in Monmouth County and Old Bridge in Middlesex County. Aberdeen shares a maritime border with Staten Island.

Aberdeen Population

How many people live in Aberdeen? According to the 2010 United States Census, there were 18,210 people, 6,876 households, and 4,923 families (Cliffwood Beach – 3,191 people and Strathmore – 7,258 people) residing in Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Government

Aberdeen is governed under the township form of New Jersey municipal government. The five-member Township Committee (elected for 3-year staggering terms) are elected directly by the voters at large in partisan elections in November.
